Backwash Instructions
Backwash
when the flow of water coming from the returns is noticeably
less than normal and/or the pressure gauge is showing a pressure
at least 5 psi. greater than normal. The filter actually cleans
better as it gets dirty. (There are fewer openings between
the sand particles as the filter traps debris.) If you backwash
too often, you are not getting the most out of the filter.
- Pump off! You can damage the gasket
inside the multiport valve if you move the handle before
turning the pump off. A damaged gasket can cause an uncontrollable
leak.
- Once the handle is in the Backwash Position, Pump
on! There may be water trickling from the discharge
hose, but you are not cleaning the filter if the pump is
not running.
- If the water from the hose does not clear within 3 minutes,
turn the pump off and wait for the water and sand in the
filter to settle – 5 minutes minimum and then backwash
the filter again.
- Once the water is clear, Pump off! Remember
– moving the handle with the pump running can damage
the gasket. Wait until the water has stopped “rushing”
before moving the handle.
- Return the handle to the Filter position and then Pump
on. You have successfully backwashed the filter.
- Check the water level in the pool –
the level has to be midway the skimmer mouth. Since pool
water was used to backwash, you may have to add water to
the pool.
It is much easier to check for debris with
the Pump off than with the pump on. When
you open the pump lid to clean the pump basket, air gets into
the system. The pump on your pool is usually self-priming
and normally it will have no problem returning to full prime.
However, make sure the pump does reach full prime before you
leave to do other things.
If you must Prime the pump,
you can remove the pump lid, add water to the pump pot (the
area where the basket sits), secure the lid, and then turn
on the pump. This method can take several attempts if a lot
of air got into the system. Usually, if you let the pump sit
for an hour or so (not running) with the lid secured, it will
obtain prime easier when you turn it on after the air was
absorbed into the water. Remember that water cools the internal
parts of the pump and you can damage the pump if it gets too
hot.
